The table for 15 will all depend on hpw they are booked that night for the smaller places. Near PPAC - Gracies, Local 121, New Rivers (small). Other favorites around town - Farmstead (small), Red Stripe (Wayland Square area), Chez Pascal. Mills Tav…

For all of you fans of Lebanese food, there is another new option in town: Nawally's Cafe. Good stuff. Everything homemade (he makes the falafel from scratch from dried garbanzo). It's not high atmosphere, but definitely good eating and warm service…

Derek - we were just in the Balkans (Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro) where the food is just that: simple with strong, clean flavors. Loved the salad, which is typical to the whole region in various forms, of small cubes of tomato, cucumber and feta - m…

Favorite Restaurant in Rhode Island
Hit all the known spots when I can afford them!
Favorite Place for Dessert
My cousin Alex's house anytime his wife Traude (from Vienna) is making dessert. Pastiche. Seth's house.
Favorite Cheap Eats
We seem to always go back to certain ethnic spots: Pho Paradise (Vietnamese), Casa Brasil (the maracuya mouse is amazing - make sure they put the sauce on for you!), Carolina's Restaurant for Dominican beef stew (it can be hit or miss, but when it's hit, it's amazing), Sun and Moon, etc.
Condiment you can't live without
A strong, fragrant olive oil is on the table with every meal; an aged, sweet balsamic; a good soy sauce; Heinz Kethup and Tobasco (let's be honest folks...); and, of course, Mr. Spice sauces (www.mrspice.com), since Mr. Spice is my brother!
About Me:
I grew up in RI and left for 20 years. Food biz guy (www.langnaturals.com), writer (lots of magazine and newspaper stuff on food, architecture and travel over the years, and some film), traveler (lived and traveled much of the time away from RI in Asia, Western Europe and Latin America, presently live part of the year in Buenos Aires). Happiest of all - I share life with my wife Carolina and baby son Luca.

Farmstead on Swine Flu and Factory Farming

[What follow is a private email which Matt Jennings, the chef and co-wner (with his wife Kate) of Farmstead & La Laiterie, sent out to friends and industry associates about the Swine Flu and factory farming. Coming from someone who is both very involved in, and very passionate about, the world of food and it's origins, it is a telling read. We reprint it here on Providence Palate with Matt's permission.]

Friends,

This is a hard email to write. Some of you are farmers. Some of you are chefs… Continue

UNITED BBQ!

Heads up: after a much anticipated opening on Ives St., United BBQ is about to pull the trigger and open its doors.

We all know how hard it is to get good BBQ in the Northeast, so our mouths are watering... The concept is inherent in the name, a sort of "We are not red states and blue states, but we are, and we have always been, the United States of BBQ", which will encompass a variety of barebecue styles.

The menu looks a great and is peppered with some distinctly Blue State, funk-o-fied entr… Continue

Tea Bliss - Basically British (Warren)

Nobody does tea like the Brits, and around here, nobody does tea like Basically British, brought to us by the Brit Fab Goldberg. Fab, like the incredible space she has created, has character. For years, it was a ritual on rainy winter days for my wife and I to make the trek out to Bristol, where she was located in a storefront, to steam away the mal… Continue

Renewing America’s Food Traditions

For all who missed it, there has been an article in the New York Times (featured on the home page of the web edition for much of both yesterday and today) about Gary Paul Nabhan, who "has spent most of the past four years compiling a list of endangered plants and animals that were once fairly commonplace in American kitchens but are now threate… Continue

Sidewalk table permit response from city council (from forum "Restaurant problems on Broadway")

A forum item raised the issue of the lack of tables at restaurants on Broadway. I wrote to a councilman (not the councilman for that ward), and his response follows. I don't understand the specifics of the issue on the West Side, but it sounds like a good start would be (a) asking the restaurant owners if in fact they want outdoor seating, or if they have chosen not to put tables out, (b) call your city council rep, and (c) call the Office of Neighborhood Services at 421-CITY.

A tea tasting is a great idea. I love all kinds but need the caffeinated black variety in the morning, otherwise I'm useless. I look forward to meeting your Luca!

84 High Street is in downtown Westerly, RI. Living in South County I tend to hang out in restaurants close to me, but I'm willing to explore other recommended areas.

Pronto is on Thames Street across the street from IYRS. Small, chef run restaurant with great combinations of ingredients. Not toooo trendy as so many Newport restaurants are!
