Seven Moons............in North Kingstown....everything is good there!

I believe the word is "Omakase" meaning entrusting your food selection to the sushi chef. He will present several small courses taking you through hot, cold, sweet, salty, crunchy and soup courses. I have been to Morimoto in Philly and NYC. Both are excellent.

Haruki-san in my sushi purveyor of choice here in Providence. I just wish their sake selections were better. If Mr. Haruki is reading, I'm happy to make choyu and sake recommendations - gratis.

tony, i totally agree about haruki. do you prefer the one in providence rather than the original in cranston? btw, crazy horse the restaurant you mentioned in philadelphia might be a tad out of the way....

Haruki East- Wayland Square is my favorite

Haruki is generally good but service can be abysmal. Try the spicy tuna sandwich at Sakura on Wickenden. The place is uncomfortable, the service mediocre, the rest of the food so-so, but the spicy tuna sandwich is really interesting.

Uncle Sushi on 570 Reservoir Ave. in Cranston is divine. The service is prompt and friendly, the atmosphere is inviting and unpretentious, and the food is fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced.

I would like to second Uncle Sushi.

Also, I am kind of in love with "uncle"

I'm lucky enough to say that I haven't really had bad sushi ever. Some places might be better than others for service, presentation, or price - and I have to be able to order some gyoza, every place has their own version of that. But as long as it's fresh I'm happy. Certain places may be more creative in terms of special rolls, but I'm usually more conservative when ordering sushi. I like a good maguro, smoked salmon, hamachi, spicey tuna rolls, teka maki, shrimp tempura rolls....

When I lived on Wickenden & Brook St. I frequented Tokyo and Sakura, sometimes Haruki. There are fewer options on the West end where I am now, although Phoenix Dragon added Japanese to their repertoire - has anyone had their sushi yet? If I want sushi for lunch when I'm at work, I'll go to Fresh Catch in Mansfield.

I have had the sushi at Phoenix Dragon, and it was quite decent, much better than I expected from the usual "Chinese restaurant branching out" sushi you find. In fact, with this recent renovation, I found that Phoenix Dragon's food in general took a step up, although it's still solidly in the typical "Americanized Chinese" camp.

I used to love Phoenix Dragon - so I completely disagree with the assessment that it has improved in any way since the makeover.

It used to be a good place to get Dim Sum on Sunday mornings - including some tasty and unusual selections like pea pod leaves. Now its pan-Asian identity crisis has led to a total disaster - the sushi is ho-hum, the Dim Sum tastes like it was microwaved just a little too long, and the Chinese food has gotten greasier without getting more flavorful. To top it off, the fish tanks and the big, round family-style tables that made this a great place to take the kids are gone!

It is squarely off of my list when I am thinking about where to go. However, if you are interested in drinking mammoth flaming cocktails like the Volcano (or watching teenagers do the same), the Phoenix Dragon is your spot.

I also love Haruki, but I've had a few service nightmares in Cranston when they were way too busy and things tasted like they'd been sitting around a bit. I thought the service at the one in Wayland Square was horrible and the prices a tad high.
My favorite all around is probably Ran Zan on Hope St. The variety is limited, but the quality is good and the service is great (if you avoid busy hours as the place is very small and prone to lots of takeout orders from nearby East Siders).
I worked at Sea Shai in Middletown on and off for a few years, and their sushi is mighty fine as well.
