Rhode Island Food Culture: Dining, Drinking & Food Stuff

With Patriot Place opening this fall adjacent to Gillette Stadium there are a flurry of new casual and upscale eateries that will be new to the area.

Coming Soon!
Bar Louie ,CBS Scene ,Davio's ,Red Robin ,Skipjack's ,Tastings Wine Bar & Bistro

I know they are for the most part "corporate" restaurants but I'm just wondering if anyone has any expeience dining at any of these restuarants and what everyone will think it will do for RI Dining. I'm thinking it will boost our tourism overall because Gillette is only 25 miles from Downcity Providence but will people from RI drive past Providence to dine at a restaurant in Foxboro when there is something of equal or better value in there backyard.

Just a thought.

Cheers!

So many Rhode Islanders hate driving out of their own neighborhoods...I doubt that this new complex is going to affect Providence dining in any way. I could be wrong, of course. Seems to me that if you're already going to Gillette, or if you'll be in the neighborhood, that's one thing. But to drive 20 miles north? I don't know. That being said, if I hear that one of these places is really amazing, I will make the trip, too...but the fact that it's near Gillette already tells me that it's probably geared toward the masses...not what I'm looking for. Besides, there's still too many great dining places around here that I haven't gotten to...and once you're done eating, you can at least walk around Providence. And sorry, Crazy Horse...I don't agree: Providence is not over-rated. If you're getting mugged or a parking ticket, maybe you should put your car in a better place! I've been here 18 years and never had a problem with any of that.

Patriot Place is going to be the premier outdoor lifestyle shopping and entertainment center in New England, there is nothing like it around...and no Wrentham isn't even close. Anyway there will be over 70 stores, fine and casual dining, a movie theatre, a health care facility, a hotel, and an entertainment value to host concerts and such. Just to give you a quick bio about it.

I agree with if there is something real good that I will make the trip as well but I was just wondering if anyone had heard about all the new going on in our local North. Some interesting things going on.

For the most part Providence is safe, I live on Federal Hill and walk and run the streets daily. There are issues here and there but there are everywhere.

Bar Louie?! That couldn't be the same place as in Chicago, could it? (Small mini-chain in Chicago.) Food's not great - typical bar food menu. It's a drinking place more than anything else if it's the same place.

Bar Louie is a chain...here is a quick clip from there site. http://www.barlouieamerica.com/
"This hip neighborhood restaurant and bar specializes in oversized sandwiches and artfully created jumbo martinis but also offers an extensive selection of appetizers, pastas and entrees; plus wide assortment of interesting beers, microbrews and wines by the glass or bottle. Warm surroundings with an urban feel include nightlife photography, signature hand-laid tile artwork, hardwood floors, and exposed brick walls. Service is speedy with a smile. Open for lunch, dinner, after-work or late night dining."

I agree with those who say the dining "scene" at Patriot Place will not take anything away from the Providence restaurant scene. There are tons of people living in all of the towns surrounding Foxboro, who will probably check out Patriot Place before driving to Providence or Boston. Many people who live in these suburb-like towns don't mind eating at chains. But the people who are looking for a unique dining experience or an urban experience that extends beyond just a meal, will still head to Providence. The dining in Providence is not over-rated, the only way you could say that is if you never set foot outside of the mall.
Patriot Place will also be able to draw on the 68,000+ people during Pats home games, and the 20,000 or so for Revs games.
Since I work in Foxboro for the time being (which goes against my urban ideology), I might check out some of the places for lunch during the week - the options around here now get old fast.

The suburban folks will dig this I'm sure... It's as close as they'll be able to get to a place having a "vibe" (that an urban area like Providence supplies naturally).

While Providence certainly isn't overrated as a dining destination (in fact its still a bit stealth regionally, I'd say) we certainly could use more diversity. I may be nauseous if I see anyone open yet another New American or Mainstream Italian... I think I audibly groaned at the announcements of Aspire and Baccaro... We could use something a bit more original and experimental...
