Rhode Island Food Culture: Dining, Drinking & Food Stuff

Anybody have a good suggestion for where to get great fresh fish? We're the Ocean State and the fishmongers seem very limited. I've tried the place next to Tito's in Seekonk (Tony's?) - decent but I think we can do better.

I've heard there are some good places in New Bedford. Anybody know where to go there? I wonder if you can find locally caught fish ...

I used to get my fish in Warren at Best of the Bay until they closed. But the Blount factory store on Water Street is a great place to get soups and chowders in big bags to take home. Now Hall's seafood (which used to be in the center near the bike path) has moved into the same location as the Blount store. Worth the nice drive and a visit to the Warren waterfront.

i agree about blounts factory store. amazing soups, etc. what does hall's seafood specialize in?

I have been to both of the Captains Catch..and, I really like the Mineral Spring Ave. location, In Warwick, I have been consistantly dissapointed...once, I ordered lobster-clam bakes, it tood over an hour for them to make the tins up..and, I had ordered them ahead! The fish is OK...the personnel try hard, but I am always dissapointed in the service.

that's good to know; thanks for the info. i live very near the one in warwick, but will make the trek to mineral spring. how would you compare that store to the fish dep't at whole foods?

well...whole foods is whole money...lots of it. captains catch isnt too shabby either, but a little better that whole foods prices..I enjoy going right down to point judith for lobster right off the boat..other fish...well, costco's has a fish kinda thing with good choices on a certain night in avon or needham I think...usually on a friday night..I heard about Tonys in Mass...supposed to be good.

All though I'm a newbie to Prov and RI a friend who has lived here all his life explained the lack of fish mongers in Providence this way...
"It's hard to find a good fish monger here because all of the good fish goes to the Providence restaurants. They have larger buying power and can sell almost all the fish they buy."
I've been to the one in Seekonk (Tony's) the seafood is ok but they are not too friendly.
I've been going to Whole Foods (WholePaycheck) for seafood.

so why aren't there any good seafood restaurants here;-)

I hear ya! The best seafood seems to come from local seafood shacks. But when it comes to an actual seafood restaurant, I've found that Legal Seafoods is boring...McCormick and Schmick's is uninspired...Hemenway's is mediocre. The best seafood dishes I've ever had in Rhode Island have come from restaurants that aren't seafood places, per se: the Chilean sea bass with a potato crust at the now-former Raphael Bar Risto...a whole-fried red snapper with a ginger sauce from Thai taste in Swansea...etc

I am planning a local seafood initiative...probably online ordering with one time weekly deliveries. It will be all frozen, but frozen is Fresher than Fresh 9 times out of 10.

I am a Fish Monger by trade. Primarily dealing with scallops, but I also handle several other items on a smaller scale for specialty customers. I just posted a forum regarding Mexican Bay scallops, but if anyone has any requests please let me know.

We intend to sell only the absolute best of the best seafood with a small and reasonable mark up. I would also like to carry some exotics to expand people's horizons.

Please PLEASE let us know when you get this initiative together! I'll be your first customer! I am a weekly fish cooker/eater and am endlessly frustrated with the lack of options in Providence.

yes, please let us know when this is happening. wonderful idea; i would definitely be interested!

I find some of the best, although limited choices, are at the Farmer's Markets: Bombster scallops and shrimp at the Hope Street market, clams and oysters at the downtown market. I suggest we increase demand and small business by asking these vendors to bring in more variety/specialty items that we can't get at the chain stores.
